West Oakland

Vibrant and home to a culture of loft living, nightlife, and a more affordable alternative to SOMA, the Jack London Square area combines not only the older Victorian homes, but new condominium structures.

Buyers looking for live-work spaces or renovation opportunities have begun to move in, taking advantage of the growth the district offers. There are plenty of hip restaurants, good shopping, and much more in the planning stages. For commuters, West Oakland is located near BART, the Bay Bridge, the ferry, and all major East Bay freeways. Working families, young professionals, and artists have made for an area that is enjoying a new popularity.

There’s an urban feel to the area that keeps the energy up. For access to outdoor activities, you’re still close to the fantastic hiking and recreation areas just to the east. The appeal of living in an industrial loft, commuting into the city, and still having a reason to hang on to your mountain bike appeals to a lot of younger buyers.

Buyers will find everything from vacant building lots to factory conversions to turn-of-the-century frame homes. There are some commercial/residential properties in the offerings, as well.

A great way to experience the West Oakland district is to check out the busy retail, nightlife and dining scene that is center around Jack London Square on the waterfront. You’ll see everything from Yoshi’s Jazz Club to the Oakland Grill for breakfast - there’s also a weekly farmer’s market.
